6 Brand Assets Your Food & Farm Business Needs…and Why

Sweet treats from Nova Super Natural Bakery.

Running a successful business is more than putting your products on a table and hoping customers will purchase them. It’s about building a genuine connection between a business and a person, offering solutions to their problems, and creating a long-lasting, trusting relationship.

Building this relationship can be done in many different ways, but one incredibly important part of it is telling a story. Just like when you meet a new person, you take in different elements of their personhood to put together a story – how they speak, the clothes they wear, what they’re interested in, and more.

Your brand does the same thing for your business! It’s made up of different elements that all work together to tell a story. These are the 6 pieces of a brand that your business should have to tell a consistent, effective, and compelling brand story.

Logo

Your logo is a visual representation of your products and mission. Ideally, it’s immediately distinguishable by your customers and separates you from your competitors. A well-designed logo is the core of a strong brand and is essential to building a loyal customer base and reputable brand.

Brand Kit

A brand kit is comprised of three different elements: a logo, a color palette, and brand fonts. Using consistent colors and fonts helps to create a cohesive look for your brand, and works alongside your logo to generate brand recognition.

Brand Statement & Tagline

A tagline is a short, one-sentence description of your business that is perfect for when you need to share what you do in a small space or very quickly. Taglines are often associated with something cute and catchy (and it can be!) but it doesn’t have to be that. Something short and to the point is ideal

Here are two examples of different types of taglines:

A straightforward, quick summary:

“Producing the highest quality fermented foods to support optimal digestion.”

Short with a bit of humor, but still clearly explains what they do:

“Growing food so you don’t have to!”

A brand statement is an expanded version of your tagline – it goes into a bit more depth and paints a broader picture of your business.

These two written pieces will likely be used a lot – on farmers market applications, grant applications, social media profiles, websites, and more. Having them ready to go helps with efficiency and ensures your brand messaging is consistent, leading to better customer connections.

Social Media Templates

Having branded templates for social media is a great way to add some variation to the videos and photos you post. We recommend making several so you have visual variety and design options depending on the type of content you’re sharing.

Use your templates to share about an upcoming event, what you’re harvesting that week, a product highlight, a new partnership, and so much more!

Custom Packaging

Custom packaging can take countless forms, and it doesn't have to be costly. The goal is to display your products in a way that differentiates your products from your competitors. Even adding a logo sticker to a basic paper bag is an upgrade from an unlabelled package.

Including your logo, brand colors, and brand fonts is a must! Consistency and recognition are crucial in building brand awareness.

Website

We’ve said it before, and we will keep saying it – every business should have a website! Not only is it a great place to share comprehensive information about your business, but it also provides trustworthiness and credibility to your brand.

Not having a website requires a potential customer to do more work than they likely want to do, so make it easy for them to support your business with a well-designed, functional website that has all of the information they could ever need.
